According to Deadline.com, the hysterical HBO series “Eastbound and Down” is undergoing some radical changes for its upcoming second season. Kenny Powers, the foul-mouthed washed-up pitcher played by Danny McBride, is heading south of the border. We last saw Kenny embroiled in a mini-breakdown after his deal with the Tampa Bay Rays fell apart. Panic stricken, Powers left his girlfriend on the side of the road and drove off into the horizon. Season 2 opens with the beloved anti-hero playing ball in Mexico.
To paraphrase the philosopher Kenny Powers: Some old cast members are fuckin’ out, and some new cast members are fuckin’ in. Michael Peña (Crash, World Trade Center) is set to star as the owner of the Mexican team that hires Kenny. Peña starred alongside Seth Rogen in Observe and Report (the funniest movie of 2009), a film that happened to be written and directed by “Eastbound” co-creator Jody Hill. Nacho Libre‘s Ana de la Reguera (click for pics) will also join the cast as Kenny’s new love interest. The role of Kenny Powers’ father is in the process of being cast. Who would you like to see as the patriarch of the Powers clan? I could see a real hard-ass like Powers Boothe or M.C. Gainey playing the shit out of that part.
As far as last season’s group of oddball supporting characters go, it doesn’t look like there’s much hope for the people of Shelby, North Carolina. Deadline.com says, “Because of the new setting, most of the cast members from Season 1 of the show will have little or no presence next season with the exception of Steve Little whose character Stevie Janowski will track Danny down in Mexico.” Let the hilarity ensue.
“Eastbound and Down” is set to begin production on Season 2 next month. An air date has not yet been announced.
